If your Windows 11 Pro key is not working, it is tempting to buy another and hope that fixes it. But another purchase could leave you with the same error if the installed edition or activation setup is wrong.
Start by checking what Windows is actually reporting. You may already have the license you need.
Quick check: Open Settings > System > Activation. Write down the Windows edition, activation status and complete error code. Those details will help you choose the right next step.
1. Make sure the Windows edition matches your key
Read the full edition name. Windows 11 Pro, Pro N, Pro for Workstations and Enterprise are different editions. A standard Pro key does not directly activate every edition with Windows 11 in its name.
If Windows 11 Home is installed, a valid Pro key can be used to upgrade it. Microsoft recommends activating Home first, then entering the Pro key through Change product key on the Activation page. Back up important files before changing editions and follow Microsoft’s Home to Pro upgrade instructions.
Notice where the process stops. Does Windows reject the key while you are still on Home, or does it switch to Pro and then fail to activate? Include that distinction when asking for help.
2. Check the key you are entering
Use the original purchase email or your order details. A Windows product key contains 25 characters. Copy only the key and check that you have not included spaces, extra text or an order number.
If you copied a free key from a guide, check whether it is a generic installation key. These can help select an edition during setup, but they do not give you a paid license or activate Windows on their own. Our guide to generic Windows installation keys explains the difference.
Keep the original key private. You can show someone an activation error without publishing the full code you purchased.
3. Run the Windows activation troubleshooter
First, check your internet connection, finish any pending Windows updates and restart the PC. Also check that the system date and time are correct.
On current Windows 11 devices, open Get Help, search for Windows activation and follow the diagnostic prompts. You can also use Troubleshoot on the Activation page when it is available.
Use an administrator account. Microsoft notes that the Activation troubleshooting option is available while Windows is unactivated and disappears once activation succeeds. See its Activation troubleshooter guidance for the supported options.
Afterward, return to the Activation page. If Windows 11 Pro now shows as activated, there is no need to keep entering keys. If it still fails, save the latest error message.
4. Use the error code to choose your next step
An error code narrows the checks. It does not always identify a single cause, so read the message beside it too.

The key was not accepted. Recheck the code, installed edition and upgrade stage.

The key may already be in use or exceed its device allowance. Check transfers or contact the seller.

Windows cannot use the supplied key for activation. Ask the seller to verify it.

Check internet access and whether the activation service is temporarily unavailable.
0xC004F074
Check whether Windows expects an organization’s activation service. Ask your IT team on a work device.
These are starting points from Microsoft’s activation error guidance. A rejected key is a reason to investigate or request support before placing another order.
For a personal PC, an unexpected organization activation message deserves a closer look. Microsoft explains that KMS client keys depend on an appropriate volume activation environment and do not serve as retail licenses. Ask the seller which license and activation method you received.
5. Check whether you already have a digital license
If Windows 11 Pro was previously activated on this PC with a digital license, reinstalling the same edition on the same hardware can reactivate online without entering a key. Sign in with the Microsoft account previously linked to that license, if applicable.
A digital license for Home does not activate Pro. Confirm which edition was licensed before the reinstall. Microsoft’s Windows activation guide explains how digital licenses and product keys work.
Also check your earlier order history. A failed attempt with a different key does not tell you everything about the license the computer already had.
6. Consider any recent hardware changes
Did activation stop after you replaced the motherboard? A major hardware change can prevent Windows from recognizing the existing digital license.
Follow Microsoft’s hardware reactivation process. If the troubleshooter offers I changed hardware on this device recently, use the Microsoft account previously linked to the license and select the correct device.

7. Contact the seller before buying another key
If you have checked the edition, tried the original key and run the troubleshooter, give support enough detail to investigate. Send:
Your order number.
The complete Windows edition name.
The latest error code and message.
Whether this is a fresh installation, Home to Pro upgrade, reinstall or hardware change.
The checks you have already completed.
